Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Chicken – Crispy Takeout-Style Recipe at Home

Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Chicken is a crispy, flavorful takeout-style favorite made healthier at home. Tender chicken pieces are lightly coated, air-fried to perfection, and tossed in a savory peppery seasoning with garlic and chilies.


Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb chicken thighs or breast, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the Tossed Seasoning:

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1–2 red chilies, thinly sliced

  • 1 green chili, thinly sliced

  • 3 green onions, chopped

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon white pepper


Instructions:

1. Marinate the Chicken:

  • In a bowl, combine chicken pieces, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, garlic powder, salt, and white pepper.

  • Let it marinate for 15–20 minutes.

2. Coat & Air Fry:

  • Toss the marinated chicken in cornstarch until lightly coated.

  • Drizzle with vegetable oil and toss to coat evenly.

  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C).

  • Air fry chicken in a single layer for 12–15 minutes, shaking halfway through, until golden and crispy.

3. Prepare the Seasoning Mix:

  • In a skillet, heat a teaspoon of oil over medium heat.

  • Sauté garlic and chopped chilies for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  • Add salt, black pepper, white pepper, and green onions, stir briefly.

4. Toss & Serve:

  • Add the crispy chicken to the skillet and toss with the seasoning mix until well coated.

  • Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
